When I started building my own academy in 2010, there wasn't a straightforward roadmap. I had to work out how to structure courses, write training manuals, gain accreditation, assess students, create the right paperwork, set my prices, manage bookings and policies, and build the systems that sit behind the actual teaching. I'll take you through the process step by step, from deciding what you're ready to teach and developing your first course, through accreditation, insurance, assessment and student documentation, to pricing, policies, marketing, online education and ultimately launching your academy. This isn't about creating the biggest academy, offering dozens of courses or following somebody else's version of success. Your academy might mean teaching one-to-one from a home studio, running small groups, developing online education or eventually building something much larger. The aim is to help you build an academy that is professional, responsible and right for the educator you want to become.

Creating a training academy involves far more than writing a manual and gaining accreditation. You need to know how to structure a course, teach practical skills effectively, assess your students, create the right systems and documentation, understand your professional responsibilities and build an academy that works for both you and the people you train. This course brings all of those elements together. New to education? This course is not a teaching qualification. If you don’t already hold an appropriate teaching qualification, I also offer the Level 3 Award in Education and Training (AET), which provides a recognised foundation in the principles and practice of teaching. The accreditation organisations I have worked with require educators to hold an appropriate teaching qualification, such as the Level 3 AET, alongside relevant subject qualifications and experience. Requirements vary between providers, so you should always check the current requirements of the accreditation organisation you intend to use.
